Kara Grainger takes a casual approach to explaining herself that’s typical of a seasoned musician. It’s hard to put a label on what she does, or what she listens to.
“If I listen to classic blues, I generally go towards southern, swampy stuff with loud, upfront vocals and simple, meaningful guitar parts,” she observes, “but if I’m listening to electric blues I go to the funkier side of it or the New Orleans side. That’s what I like to listen to and what I try to incorporate into my show. The blues for me has got to be really funky or really honest.”

Kara Grainger is an Australian soul blues and roots rock singer-songwriter, based out of Nashville, Tennessee, United States. She played with the Papa Lips band starting in In , they were awarded the "Best New Band" award at the Australian Blues Music Awards. They changed their name to Grainger in and continued to play together until She signed as a solo artist with Craving Records in
Early life
[edit]Grainger was always singing, and started learning how to play the guitar at age 12, improvising by her mid-teens.[2][3] Grainger taught herself to play while listening to musicians such as Etta James, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Little Feat.[4] She grew up in Balmain, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, known for its pubs and live music venues that caters to jazz and blues music.[5][6] She played in several bands during secondary school, and was encouraged by a teacher to perform live, and she took guitar lessons from a local instructor, Mark Williams who had connections to professional musicians, which lead to regular opportunities to play at one of Sydney's premiere music venues, The Basement.[5]
