Herodotusvan Halicarnassus (het huidige Bodrum in Turkije!) leefde van ca. tot / Hij was een Grieks historicus die in het westen beschouwd wordt als de “vader van de geschiedschrijving”. Hij is vooral bekend door zijn Historiën. De oorspronkelijke titel van de Historiën was Ἱστορίης ἀπόδεξις, dat ‘Verslag van mijn onderzoek’ betekent.
Het enorme boekwerk is een mengelmoes van talloze reisverslagen en een oprechte poging om geschiedenis te schrijven. Gelukkig overheersen de anekdotes en gekke weetjes van alle landen die de reislustige Herodotus heeft bezocht.
Hij was de eerste die de Griekse mythologische geschiedenis loskoppelde van de actuele geschiedenis. Maar hij was een lichtgelovig man, dol op legendes, orakels en dromen, die hij meer dan eens verwarde met feiten. Door zijn reislust en interesse voor alle volkeren in de toen bekende wereld werd hij φιλοβαρβαρος (filobarbaros) barbarenvriend genoemd.
