- Born in Glasgow, Tom Service graduated from York University and studied the music of American composer John Zorn for his PhD at the University of Southampton.
He began presenting Radio 3’s Hear and Now in 2001 and now regularly presents Music Matters, the station’s flagship classical music magazine programme, and the New Music Show. He also writes and presents The Listening Service, which has run for more than 120 episodes.
As well as fronting many Proms on BBC radio and television, he has presented a number of BBC TV documentaries, including a six-part series of 20th-Century Classics at the Proms, The Joy of Mozart and The Joy of Rachmaninoff – and three programmes, on Handel’s Messiah, Verdi’s La traviata and Shostakovich’s ‘Leningrad’ Symphony, with co-presenter Amanda Vickery.

Tom Service (born 8 March 1976) is a Scottish writer, music journalist, and television and radio presenter. He has written regularly for The Guardian since 1999 and presented on BBC Radio 3 since 2001. He is a regular presenter of the Proms for Radio 3 and has presented several documentaries on classical music.
Early life
[edit]Service was born in Glasgow and attended Kelvinside Academy, where he learned cello and piano.[1]
Service studied music at the University of York, then studied for a masters in music at the University of Southampton.[1] He wrote his PhD thesis on American composer and musician John Zorn.[2]

[edit]Service joined BBC Radio 3 in 2001 presenting Hear and Now,[3] and from 2003 he has presented Music Matters.[4] From 2016, he started presenting a weekly show also on Radio 3, called The Listening Service, which drew comparisons to David Munrow's programme Pied Piper, which aired on the same station in the 1970s[5][6]
