    1. To start, can you briefly introduce yourself and explain your role at CAM-AMCHAM Ecuador?

    With great pleasure. First of all I want to thank Kluwer Arbitration Blog for this invitation. I want to start by telling you that I am the mother of a boy. I am also an Ecuadorian lawyer from the Universidad de las Americas, and hold a master’s degree in Arbitration and International Litigation from Universidad San Francisco de Quito. My entire professional career has been focused on arbitration and I have had the opportunity to work for different arbitration centers such as the arbitration center of the Lima Chamber of Commerce in Peru and, now, for some years at the CAM-AMCHAM Ecuador.‎

    On August 21, 2001, Patricia Abravanel—daughter of Brazilian media mogul and television personality Silvio Santos—was kidnapped in São Paulo; on August 28, Abravanel was released from her captors, and police arrested two suspects: Marcelo Batista Santos and Esdras Dutra Pinto. The two were accomplices of Esdras' brother Fernando Dutra Pinto—who was confronted in a Barueri hotel the next day and killed two officers.[1]

    On August 30, Fernando then held Silvio Santos hostage in his mansion in Morumbi for eight hours. After police negotiations assisted by Governor Geraldo Alckmin, Fernando was arrested and detained. On January 2, 2002, Fernando died in prison. On March 11, 2002, Esdra was sentenced to 19 years and six months in prison, while Marcelo, Esdras, and two other accomplices were each sentenced to 15 years.[2]
